MODEC and Toyo Engineering Corporation have received an Approval in Principle ( AiP ) from the American Bureau of Shipping ( ABS ) for the design of their blue ammonia floating production, storage and offloading ( FPSO ) unit. This innovative development seeks to improve the industry by producing ammonia from associated gas from an oil and gas FPSO, using advanced carbon capture and storage ( CCS ) technology.
The Blue Ammonia FPSO
The vessel will use blue ammonia, through the integration of CCS, and simultaneously be able to capture CO₂ emissions generated during the conversion of gas into ammonia, as well as those from gas turbine generators.
[post_relacionado]The project is the fruit of the combined experience of MODEC in FPSO design and mooring technology, and of TOYO in ammonia production processes. In addition, the hull of the floating unit has been developed in collaboration with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding , further strengthening the technological proposition of the project.
The blue ammonia produced by this FPSO is intended to become an alternative fuel in the transition to clean energy, also serving as a hydrogen carrier. MODEC sees this approval as a first step towards commercializing sustainable floating energy solutions and will continue to refine the design to overcome industry challenges.
With its 2024-2026 business plan, MODEC is betting on the development of technologies that reduce CO₂ emissions and contribute to the decarbonisation of the global energy supply chain. The blue ammonia FPSO is the start of a broader strategy that will include future floating solutions for the production of hydrogen and methanol offshore.
