The Port of Klaipėda announces the launch of its first hydrogen-electric fueled ship. This innovative vessel will be commissioned by the Klaipėda State Port Authority to perform maintenance and cleaning functions.

The ship will be designed to collect waste and ensure a cleaner port, and will be equipped with electric motors powered by 2,000 kWh batteries and a hydrogen fuel cell system, it can operate for up to 36 hours without the need for additional recharging. In addition, the vessel has specialized systems to treat wastewater and collect waste generated by other vessels.
[post_relacionado]Klaipėda State Port Authority General Director Algis Latakas said: “This is not only a technological breakthrough, but also a statement of our commitment to sustainability. This ship represents a new era for port operations – cleaner, smarter and more environmentally friendly.”
The project had a total cost of 12 million euros, and was developed jointly by West Baltic Shipyard and Baltic Workboats . Since the symbolic laying of the keel in June last year, the vessel has been built using cutting-edge technology. Once in the water, the final adjustments will be completed, including the installation of the electrical wiring and the hydrogen system.
Arnoldas Šileika, CEO of VLG Group, stressed the importance of this collaboration: “It is a testament to the success of our maritime industry and its commitment to innovative solutions that benefit the environment.”
The vessel will be dedicated to collecting waste such as rainwater, sludge and garbage, with the capacity to handle up to 400 cubic meters of liquids. Its design demonstrates how the industry can adopt sustainable technologies without compromising efficiency.
