Nippon Gases Deutschland and the HOYER Group have presented the first hydrogen-powered truck designed specifically for transporting dry ice. This development is driven by the collaboration with hylane GmbH as a business partner.
The hydrogen truck for dry ice logistics
The vehicle was officially handed over on 8 January 2025 at the Nippon Gases plant in Hürth, Germany. The Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia, Mona Neubaur, mentioned during the event that this technology could be important in making the region the first climate-neutral industrial zone in Europe.
[post_relacionado]The hydrogen truck , a Hyundai ‘XCIENT Fuel Cell’ model, adds fast refueling times ( less than 15 minutes to refuel) with a range of 450 kilometers, making it ideal for daily dry ice logistics, essential in sectors such as food and pharmaceuticals.
Nippon Gases expects to reduce CO₂ emissions by 69,000 kilograms per year compared to diesel trucks. In addition, this initiative represents a replicable model for future emission-free transport fleets.
For its part, the HOYER Group , known for its commitment to green logistics, hopes that this truck will be an opportunity to continue innovating in hydrogen-based mobility. According to Axel Remplewski, Director of Global Gas Logistics at the HOYER Group, this technology makes it possible to address transport challenges with efficiency and sustainability.
The Hürth plant, one of Nippon Gases’ most advanced sites in Europe, houses the production of atmospheric gases, and is also a filling station for various types of gases. This ecosystem will be expanded with a new plant in Zörbig , where dry ice will be produced from biogenic CO2 , closing the loop towards a fully sustainable operation.
Both Nippon Gases and the HOYER Group have led the way in developing clean transportation technologies in recent years. From the use of natural gas trucks to the adoption of hydrogen, these companies demonstrate that sustainability is viable and essential to ensure a responsible industrial future.
