Harbin Electric Corporation has started operation of the world’s first 660 MW ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed ( CFB ) power plant at the Binchang Power Plant in China.

The Binchang Project is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Energy Administration and is an initiative in the ecological restoration of the Yellow River basin. By utilizing solid waste and water from the mine, the geological restoration of the region is achieved.
[post_relacionado]With the potential to convert approximately 2 million tons of “ low calorific value coal ” and other industrial waste, such as “ coal sludge and gangue ,” into useful energy, the plant achieves the reuse of 2 million tons of mine water each year, aligning with China’s sustainable development goals.
The technical and operational efficiency of the project is due to the excellence of its components, designed by Harbin Electric. The ultra-supercritical CFB boiler , with a main steam pressure reaching 29.3 MPa and temperatures above 600 °C, achieves ultra-low emissions and minimum energy consumption.
This level of performance marks an international record in parameters and capacity for CFB boilers. Furthermore, the reverse flow turbine with indirect air cooling and the high efficiency generator allow the plant to efficiently adapt to severe conditions, such as deep load cuts or variations in electrical demand.
This project can supply 6 million GJ of heat annually, contributing to urban heating in Binzhou City and meeting the industrial steam needs in the region. It also improves the stability of the regional power grid and optimizes energy supply.
Harbin Electric Corporation, in collaboration with Chinese universities such as Tsinghua and Xi’an Jiaotong , has managed to overcome complex technical challenges to scale CFB technology to today’s ultra-supercritical parameters. The successful 168-hour full-load test, which culminated in stable operation of the plant, confirms the company’s position as a global benchmark in high-capacity, high-efficiency energy solutions.
This breakthrough is in line with the goals of China’s 13th Five-Year Plan, which aims to promote cleaner and more sustainable energy technologies. The implementation of this technology fills a gap in ultra-supercritical power generation , and promotes more efficient use of energy resources, strengthening China’s commitment to emissions reduction and the global energy transition.
