MAN Energy Solutions is developing an ammonia engine through research and development, following tests of the ME-LGIA two-stroke engine, with the aim of finding cleaner solutions for maritime transport.
A two-stroke ammonia engine to reduce emissions
With the start of testing a two-stroke engine at its Copenhagen Research Centre, MAN Energy Solutions has taken a crucial step forward in its project to make ammonia a viable fuel for the shipping industry.
[post_relacionado]Ole Pyndt Hansen, head of R&D for two-stroke engines, said the move was a significant step forward after more than a year of single-cylinder testing. The focus now is on fine-tuning the engine’s performance on a larger scale, including aspects such as combustion, emissions, and control systems.
Bjarne Foldager, Head of the Two-Stroke Engine Division at MAN Energy Solutions , emphasises that although development is progressing rapidly, safety and reliability are a priority. He says this is just the beginning, and testing will continue until mid-2025 to ensure the engine meets all standards and requirements.
