Equinor has made a significant discovery in the North Sea near the Fram field, where it discovered oil and natural gas in one of its most recent drilling operations . The exploration well, located just 10 kilometres north of the giant Troll field , has revealed the presence of both oil and gas reservoirs, highlighting the importance of the area for the future production of energy resources.
Equinor discovers oil and gas in Rhombi
This discovery was made in the Rhombi field, where wells 35/11-30 S and 35/11-30 A were successfully drilled, finding oil in both trajectories. Of the resources found, approximately half correspond to natural gas, which could increase the extraction of fossil fuels in the region.

Challenges and prospects in the Rhombi area
The discovery is significant due to the volume of resources identified and the proximity to existing infrastructure in the North Sea. The company, together with its partners, is evaluating how to connect this new deposit to the already established production infrastructure, which could accelerate its exploitation and production of resources .

The Rhombi area is particularly relevant , as a total of 12 discoveries have been made there between 2018 and 2023, highlighting the potential of the recent well and the entire area for future oil and gas discoveries.

The North Sea license holders for this discovery include Equinor Energy AS (45%), Price Energi ASA (40%) and INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS (15%). Equinor’s involvement in this exploration process highlights its central role in the global energy industry , especially in Norway, where the company has consolidated its presence as a leader in energy production.
This discovery is the first of 2024 for Equinor in the area , and is expected to open new opportunities for oil and gas production in the region, adding value to past explorations and paving the way for future extractions in the North Sea.
