ADNOC and 44.01 have announced the expansion of their carbon dioxide-to-rock project in the Emirate of Fujairah. This agreement was revealed during ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi, where progress in the region’s decarbonisation strategy was highlighted.

The pilot project was launched in 2023, managing to mineralize 10 tons of CO₂ in less than 100 days. This process used Fujairah’s natural peridotite formations, a type of rock capable of reacting efficiently with carbon dioxide. This success initiated the first phase of expansion, seeking to capture more than 300 tons of CO₂, with the aim of evaluating its industrial viability on a large scale.

Talal Hasan, CEO of 44.01, stressed: “ The viability of this technology in the UAE is a huge step forward. Now, we are focused on demonstrating its commercial potential. ”.
Using renewable energy supplied by Masdar , the project captures CO₂ directly from the atmosphere, dissolving it in seawater for injection and mineralisation underground. This technology has gained prestige, including recognition from the Earthshot Prize , and continues to stand out for its ability to reduce the carbon footprint.
