Nestlé Purina PetCare, in collaboration with The Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) and Nikola Corporation, has launched its first zero-emissions delivery with an electric semi-truck in California. This new heavy-duty vehicle, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell , represents a step toward cleaner, more efficient logistics in Purina’s supply chain.

Purina reduces emissions in California with electric semi-trailer
On its first route, the truck is transporting popular Purina products, such as Tidy Cats cat litter, across three cities in the state: Stockton, Maricopa and Modesto. This effort is part of Purina’s overall strategy to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions while promoting innovation in the transportation sector.
Nikola’s Class 8 hydrogen truck has an impressive range of up to 500 miles and can refuel in less than 20 minutes. It also avoids the emission of approximately 97 metric tons of CO₂ per year , which is equivalent to taking 23 passenger vehicles off the road. Travis Krous, Purina’s director of supply chain operations, said the test will help assess the feasibility of expanding the technology in the future.
In addition to the advancements in its transportation fleet, Purina has adopted sustainable practices in its production. At its Maricopa plant, the company uses solar energy to dry the clay used in its cat litter. It has also improved its use of recycled packaging, with the goal that by the end of the year, all Tidy Cats packaging will be made from 100% recycled materials.
The partnership with KAG and Nikola underscores Purina’s commitment to sustainability and innovative solutions across its operations.
