The Ministry of Mines and Energy(MME) has inaugurated Colombia’s First Energy Municipality, a hybrid generation plant that will supply constant energy to Cumaribo, in the state of Vichada. This project will benefit more than 1,350 families, an important Colombian community.

This power plant, the largest built by the Instituto de Planificación y Promoción de Soluciones Energéticas(IPSE), an entity attached to the Ministry, is located in Colombia’s Non-Interconnected Zones. With an investment of more than 20 billion pesos, the project includes a 1.4 MW solar field with 3094 solar panels of 460Wp each, a 1408 kWh lithium battery bank consisting of 160 batteries of 87.6 VDC each, and three diesel backup plants.

We are correcting decades of neglect by the State towards these municipalities. “. In addition, the minister emphasized that the current government is focusing its investments on the areas most in need, helping to repair the damage caused by years of neglect.
In addition, Camacho mentioned Cumaribo’s commitment to crop substitution, mentioning that 96% of its inhabitants have participated in this process to transform their territory. The electric power projects and public projects and public investments are vital for peace and exemplify efforts towards a just energy transition.
With a total investment of more than 20 billion pesos, 160 batteries and more than 3 thousand solar panels, this project provides 24 hours of energy, representing development, rights and new opportunities for these municipalities. Camacho also announced the creation of a line of credit with public banks to finance the construction of another 240 similar energy municipalities throughout the country.
“In the province of Cumaribo, we are not only implementing energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but we are delivering hopes, dreams and development. This first sustainable energy municipality in Colombia, will drive families to transform their lives and their land. Moreover, the new continuous energy source boosts local productive projects, improving people’s quality of life and strengthening the region’s economy, thus promoting inclusive and equitable development.

In addition to the implementation of this power plant, the Training School for Just Energy Transition, an initiative of the Ministry of Mines and Energy and IPSE, is also being carried out in Cumaribo. This school aims to transmit and build essential knowledge for the creation, implementation and maintenance of Energy Communities in Non-Interconnected Zones.
