Rijeka Gateway, a strategic alliance between APM Terminals and ENNA Group, is revolutionizing digital connectivity in the maritime industry with the implementation of a state-of-the-art private 5G technology network. This new technology promises up to 20 times faster data speeds and significantly lower latency compared to LTE networks used in other terminals in recent years.
This week, a partnership with Croatian telecommunications company Hrvatski Telekom (HT) was unveiled, a move that reinforces Rijeka Gateway’s commitment to environmental responsibility and technological progress.
Benefits of 5G technology for the maritime industry
[post_relacionado]Rijeka Gateway is an innovative project with no previous LTE network, enabling the terminal to be the first HT facility to use 5G Stand Alone (SA) architecture. This technology provides multiple benefits, including ultra-low latency, faster data rates, enhanced security, improved energy efficiency, and a cloud-native, service-based architecture that facilitates service agility and scalability.
Industrial wireless connectivity has been a key driver for APM Terminals’ global initiatives. These initiatives include standardization of terminal operating systems, reporting and support, GPS-based position sensing systems, remote equipment operation, optical character recognition, and the use of thousands of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to provide customers with real-time information on the location and status of cargo at the terminal.
WiFi networks, which can be unstable, are reaching their limits to reliably handle the growing volume of data required by APM Terminals’ digital transformation.
Rijeka to reduce environmental impact with electric equipment
Rijeka Gateway, which will start operations in 2025, will use the HT public mobile network for its electrical equipment, which will be operated mostly remotely. This container handling equipment will minimize environmental impact and reduce noise and pollution in the local community.
Peter Corfitsen, managing director of Rijeka Gateway, emphasizes: “The Rijeka terminal will be the only one in this part of Europe with remotely operated cranes, almost all equipment will be electric, and we are installing advanced energy optimization and overall terminal management systems. A high-quality and reliable communications infrastructure is essential for these operations. “
For her part, Marijana Bačić, board member and director of operations for business customers at HT, said,“The project demonstrates Rijeka Gateway’s confidence in our capabilities and confirms our strategy of delivering business-critical communications over our public mobile network.”
With a 50-year concession, Rijeka Gateway will be the main entry point for container traffic to inland European countries and markets, playing a crucial role in local economic development.
