The group of companies, Snam, Tenaris, and Tenova, announce the successful completion of the first experiment using hydrogen in the processing of steel products for the decarbonization of steel. This initiative specializes in the development and supply of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metalworking industry.
The first tests for the decarbonization of steel
The project will be carried out in an estimated timeframe of three to six months, seeking to evaluate the performance and reliability of hydrogen use in the steel sector. The main objective is to use locally produced hydrogen to fuel a burner developed by Tenova(100% H2 ready) in a heating furnace for the hot rolling of seamless pipes at the plant of TenarisDalmine located in Dalmine, in the province of Bergamo. In addition, the test will help establish safety guidelines and plant management procedures, encouraging the development of solutions that reduce CO₂ emissions in complex industrial processes.
[post_relacionado]The subsidiary TenarisDalmine will provide the site and the heating furnace, applying its experience in the installation, management and performance monitoring of steel plants. For its part, Snam will provide an alkaline electrolysis system, which will operate to produce the hydrogen needed for the test, leveraging its expertise in hydrogen and molecular transport technologies.
The company Tenova will complete the value chain of the process Tenova will complete the value chain of the process by sharing its knowledge of combustion systems and supplying burners specifically designed to operate with hydrogen. This project also counts with the contribution of Techint Engineering & Construction, which will provide design and project management services, applying general and detailed engineering of the facility, such as risk analysis and verification of compliance with safety requirements.
With this initial collaboration at the TenarisDalmine plant, Snam supports a relevant player in the sector through the“Hydrogen as a Service” modality, enabling the use of decarbonized hydrogen in industrial plants. This program is part of Snam’s effort to accompany industrial companies on their path towards decarbonization, testing solutions that could be scaled up in the future.
At the same time, Techint Group companies(TenarisDalmine, Tenova and Techint Engineering & Construction) reinforce their expertise in the development, implementation and validation of technologies necessary for the progressive decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries, gradually replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen.
