Trafigura Group, with extensive experience in the global commodities industry, has successfully completed its first ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia transfer operation. This event took place last week in international waters near the port of Ceuta, in the Strait of Gibraltar.
The first ship-to-ship ammonia transfer
In this transfer, about 6,000 metric tons of ammonia(NH3) supplied by CF Industries were moved from its manufacturing complex in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. The transaction was carried out safely between the Medium Gas Carrier(MGC) Green Power, operated by Purus under a time charter, and the small gas carrier Gas Aegean, owned by Trafigura.
[post_relacionado]International Fender Provider (IFP) supervised the STS operation in accordance with current regulations. Although STS transfers are common for other products, their application in the ammonia industry is recent. The ammonia will be used by Fertiberia for fertilizer production.

In May 2024, Trafigura signed an agreement to acquire four MGCs that will use low-carbon ammonia as a propulsion fuel. . The ships will be built at the HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, with the first scheduled for delivery in 2027.
