Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. began the world’s first technological feasibility test of an ultra-large dump truck with rigid structure and full battery. This innovative vehicle is operating at First Quantum Minerals Ltd’s Kansanshi copper and gold mine in Zambia . The purpose of the test is to verify the truck’s performance under real operating conditions.
Evaluation of the dump truck under real conditions
During the test, the dump truck with full battery will be evaluated on crucial aspects such as travel, turning and braking under actual operating loads. In addition, battery charge and discharge cycles will be analyzed to ensure battery efficiency and performance. First Quantum, with its expertise in trolley system technology, is providing the necessary infrastructure and facilities for this test at its Kansanshi mine.

First Quantum plans to expand its use of renewable energies, including solar, wind and biogas. About Hitachi Construction Machinery’s Dump Truck
The truck was developed in collaboration with ABB Ltd., a leader in electrification and automation. Using dynamic charging systems, the truck can operate continuously without the need to stop for recharging, thanks to direct charging from overhead lines and the regenerative braking system. This design allows for greater charging capacity and reduces the weight of the battery in the vehicle.
Truck characteristics
- Initial and life-cycle cost control: The dynamic charging system limits the volume of batteries needed, reducing costs and environmental impact through life-cycle assessment.
- Reducing vehicle weight and maximizing payload capacity: Limiting battery volume reduces vehicle weight, allowing for greater payload capacity.
- Higher continuous operation rate: Dynamic loading allows the truck to operate without stopping, increasing productivity on site.

What will mining look like in the future?
The mining industry is increasingly aware of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Since June 2021, Hitachi Construction Machinery has been working with ABB to develop this electric dump truck.
In March 2023, they signed a letter of letter of intent with First Quantum to establish a zero-emissions partnership. The technology feasibility test, which began in January 2024, represents a significant step towards sustainable mining and reducing the environmental footprint.
