The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency(BSH) has given its approval on the planning of Nordseecluster A, the initial stage of RWE’s Nordseecluster project. This is a positive step for the company and its progress in project development.
Nordseecluster project phases
The Nordseecluster project is located about 46 kilometers north of the German island of Borkum and about 50 kilometers north of the island of Juist. This first approved phase has a capacity of 600 MW, covering the NC 1 and NC 2 sites. Production of essential components, such as foundations and a substation, has begun and offshore construction is expected to start next year.
[post_relacionado]In addition, the 44 Vestas V236-15.0 MW Vestas wind turbines in Nordseecluster A are expected to be fully operational and connected to the grid by 2027. The electricity generated will be transmitted through the DolWin Kappa converter platform.
RWE Offshore Wind CEO Sven Utermöhlen expressed his satisfaction with the BSH approval, which allows offshore construction to start next year. RWE has six wind farms on the German coast in its portfolio.
Renewable energy obtained from the project
The second phase of the project, Nordseecluster B, will add an additional 900 MW, with commercial operation expected to begin in early 2029. In total, the Nordseecluster wind farms are expected to generate around 6.5 terawatt hours of environmentally friendly electricity annually, according to RWE.
The company plans to use the renewable energy produced at these parks to help its industrial customers decarbonize through customized energy solutions. At the end of May 2024, RWE made the final investment decision for the Nordseecluster in the German North Sea and has signed several contracts with major suppliers.
