The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has authorized the construction of New York’s largest offshore wind farm, Sunrise Wind. This project has received final approval following the Department of the Interior’s March 2024 decision. BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein noted that this breakthrough reflects the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to developing offshore wind energy, generating good-paying jobs and combating climate change.
New York moves forward in wind energy with Sunrise Wind
Located south of Martha’s Vineyard and east of Block Island, Sunr i se Wind will have a total capacity of 924 MW, enough to power more than 320,000 homes per year. . In addition, more than 800 direct jobs will be created during construction and 300 during the annual operation of the project.

Kathy Hochul promotes wind projects in NY
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said that with this approval and the recent completion of South Fork Wind, New York solidifies its position as a national leader in offshore wind energy. He thanked the Biden administration for its continued support of clean energy projects that strengthen the green economy and create good-paying jobs.
The Sunrise team will now focus on the onshore transmission system, with offshore construction beginning later this year near Montauk, New York. The project is expected to start operations in 2026.

Joe Nolan, president of Eversource Energy, noted that this landmark project will deliver offshore wind energy at scale and support important local infrastructure investments. In addition, Ørsted and Eversource are making significant investments in the state’s offshore wind workforce and supply chain, including a record $200 million contract with Haugland Energy Group LLC, which will create more than 400 union jobs in New York.
