The Trillo nuclear power plant, located in Spain, has started a new operating cycle after successfully completing its 36th refueling. This process involved the participation of an additional 1,000 workers from approximately 40 specialized collaborating companies.

The recharge program was completed four days ahead of the original schedule. This is the third consecutive refueling to be carried out “without accidents and maintaining radiation doses” below the targets established for this period, Spain’s nuclear power plant said in a press release.
[post_relacionado]In addition, several essential activities were carried out for the correct operation of the plant. These include therenewal of planned fuel assemblies, the execution of tests requiredby operational specifications and the overhaul of installations, equipment and critical components .
During planning, a total of 12,300 work orders were executed. From the overhaul of the high pressure turbine to the cleaning and overhaul of an essential cooling pool. In addition, 22 design modifications were implemented to update and improve the facilities, adapting them to new industrial and technological requirements to ensure plant reliability and safety.
Spain’s annual electricity demand
The Trillo nuclear power plant contributes 3% of the country’s annualized electricity demand. In 2023, the plant produced 8,295 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of gross electric power, which contributed to avoiding the emission of more than 2.5 million tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere.
The plant’s press release stressed that its excellent performance indicators reflect the reliability and stability of its operation. After the absence of CO₂ emissions, nuclear energy nuclear power continues to be a vital technology that generates more than 20% of national electricity.
