Swedish construction and development firm, Skanska, has consolidated its position in the energy sector by being awarded the definitive contract worth $612 million for the renovation of the South Brooklyn Maritime Terminal (SBMT) in New York. This project aims to convert the SBMT into a US offshore wind energy hub , supporting the development of Equinor’s Empire Wind project, located in the waters adjacent to New York.
About the Empire Wind project
This ambitious project will include the demolition of pre-existing structures and the dredging of the current docks and the new ones to be built, as well as improvements to the bulkheads and the installation of infrastructure necessary for the new docks. Likewise, significant improvements will be made to the infrastructure, suitable platforms for heavy-lift cranes will be installed and an area dedicated to the preparation of components for offshore wind energy will be built.

The future offshore wind energy center
The previous phases of commitments and preparations for this project represent an investment of 249 million dollars. Preconstruction work began in January 2023 and construction activities under this contract are expected to continue until 2026.
Last February, the New York Public Design Commission (PDC) gave its approval to Equinor’s proposed design for the operations and maintenance building to be erected at the SBMT. This will facilitate operations and maintenance of the Empire Wind 1 project, which has a capacity of 810 MW and will also house the project’s onshore substation.
The transformation of the SBMT will undoubtedly encourage the production of renewable energy and boost the local economy through the creation of jobs and the development of new infrastructure. This project represents a model for future sustainable development initiatives in urban areas, combining technological innovation with respect for the environment.
