Scientists at Michigan State University (USA) have obtained a new resin, suitable for making the huge blades of wind turbines, which could be recycled into new turbine blades or a variety of products for domestic or industrial uses.
[post_relacionado]The material can be used to craft; from car taillight lenses to sinks, diapers, drinks and treats like ‘gummy bears’.
Specialist John Dorgan and his colleagues created the new material by combining glass fibers with a plant-derived polymer and a synthetic one. Panels made from this thermoplastic resin are strong and durable enough to be used on turbines. It was then possible to dissolve the panels into their constituent monomers and physically remove the glass fibers. This allowed the researchers to recast the material into new products of the same type, with identical physical properties as the originals.
“The beauty of our resin system is that at the end of its use cycle we can dissolve it, and that frees it from whatever matrix it’s in so it can be used over and over again in an infinite cycle. […] That’s the goal of the circular economy,” Dorgan said.
The researchers verified that the new resin can have a wide variety of applications from its recycling.
