Dr. Robert Montgomery of NYU Langone Health Hospital in New York has succeeded in temporarily transplanting a kidney from a genetically modified pig into a human body, in a novel procedure that could help solve the shortage of organs for transplantation.
[post_relacionado]The technique, known as xenotransplantation (from the Greek xenos, meaning strange, foreign) refers to organ transplants between different species, in this case between a pig and a human. They were introduced more than 30 years ago to fill the lack of organs required by people on waiting lists.
The operation lasted two hours and was carried out on September 25 at the NYU Langone Health hospital. In it, the kidney of a genetically manipulated pig was implanted in a brain-dead woman who was kept intubated for 54 hours, with the consent of the family, during which the level of functioning of the pig organ was studied.
The pig’s thymus gland, responsible for “educating” the immune system, was also transplanted, in order to prevent an immune response from the human body. Experts say that it is the most advanced experiment in this field to date, with xenotransplantation being an alternative that should continue to be investigated and an increasingly close possibility.
