NATO’s recent exercises in the Baltics marked a breakthrough in the use of autonomous technology for naval surveillance naval surveillance and reaction. Saildrone deployed four of its Voyager-class USVs between June 16 and 27, operating without interruption in the Gulf of Finland and the western Baltic Sea, areas of growing strategic interest.
Saildrone Drones and Allied Response
During the mission, the drones detected and tracked hundreds of vessels daily, including vessels with no AIS signal and assets identified as part of the Russian shadow fleet. This persistent surveillance capability was key to feeding real-time information into NATO’s shared operational picture, enabling agile and coordinated responses.

Their autonomy set them apart from other platforms, as they operate without direct human support or the need for on-site maintenance, which optimizes resources and reduces risks.
The Task Force X Baltic initiative, coordinated by NATO’s Allied Command Transformation, was aimed at testing the integration of autonomous systems in real-world operations. Saildrone was one of the few solutions that demonstrated effective communication with other unmanned assets, facilitating joint responses following threat detection.
A scalable model for European maritime surveillance
Saildrone offers a “data as a service” approach, delivering critical information without the need for allied forces to acquire and maintain their own equipment. This operational flexibility is suited to both tactical deployments and extended surveillance in sensitive areas of Europe’s coastline.
The data collected were directly integrated into the Saildrone Mission Portal and NATO systems, confirming Voyager’s utility in coastal security scenarioscritical infrastructure surveillance and ISR support in contested areas. The Baltic experience could be extended to other similar high-stress geopolitical environments.
