The collaboration between SKF and Proteus Marine Renewables is setting a new standard in tidal power generation, thanks to solutions designed to withstand the challenges of the subsea environment. This alliance has demonstrated the turbines’ ability to operate uninterruptedly for more than six years, validating the MeyGen Pathfinder model as a reference for large-scale projects.

Proteus AR series turbines, equipped with SKF technology, are installed directly on the seabed and take advantage of both low and rising tides by means of three-bladed rotors. Their modular design allows for quick installation, optimized maintenance and efficient integration with OEM components. SKF supplies complete yaw, pitch and main rotor shaft systems ensuring precise orientation to the ocean currents.

Proteus and SKF are looking to turn this predictability into a source of electrical baseload through short-term storage and large-scale deployments. Estimates point to a global potential of 100 GW in coastal areas with 15 GW in coastal areas with 15 GW located in Europe.
Scalability and international application
Proteus has begun installing its first megawatt-class turbine in Japan. Between 2026 and 2030 it plans to install at least 30 3 MW turbines in Scotland, France and Japan.
