The Mooir Vannin wind farm is moving forward in its development with the start of a geotechnical study of the seabed, commissioned by Ørsted to the specialized company GEO. This investigation will be carried out between 6 and 12 nautical miles off the coast of Maughold, and aims to characterize the properties of the sub-seabed in the area destined for the future wind farm.

The field tests, on board the Connector, will consist of 20 cone penetration tests(CPT) and 20 dissipation tests. This type of testing allows identifying the resistance and friction of the seabed layers, with minimal impact on the area. In addition, the work is expected to last between six and eight days, depending on weather conditions.

The GEO contract is underpinned by international expertise in high-precision subsea surveys. The company will apply rigorous protocols to minimize environmental impact and comply with Isle of Man regulatory requirements. Port and maritime traffic authorities have been informed in advance to coordinate operations.
This study is valued at approximately £2 million and funded by Ørsted, reflecting the company’s continued investment in the development of renewable energy in Manx offshore waters.
The Mooir Vannin project is a more advanced proposal to establish an offshore wind farm in the region. With the acquisition of critical geotechnical data, the company is strengthening its commitment to a sustainable energy infrastructure on the Isle of Man, aligned with international standards in the offshore wind sector.
