The Plastics Technology Center, AIMPLAS, is leading a research project to assess the risks associated with the use of reusable packaging in high temperature conditions, specifically when exposed to microwaves and dishwashers.
Study on the risks of reusable containers
With the recent approval of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which establishes mandatory targets for the reuse of packaging, there is a need for standardized procedures to ensure the safety of this packaging for human consumption.
[post_relacionado]The project, called SAFEREUSE, is under development with funding from the Valencian Institute of Competitiveness and Innovation(IVACE+i) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Through in vitro bioassays, AIMPLAS researchers are analyzing the behavior of reusable plastic packaging, focusing on the release of non-intentionally added substances(NIAS) and microplastics (MPs), elements that could compromise food safety and public health.
On the other hand, the major challenges faced by this project is the absence of standardized procedures that thoroughly assess the risks associated with reusable plastics under extreme conditions. This makes the SAFEREUSE project an initiative that will provide reliable methodologies to ensure that these containers meet the food safety requirements set by the competent authorities.
The research is focused on understanding “how plastic packaging can release microplastics and unwanted chemicals” during use in household appliances such as microwaves and dishwashers, two of the most common scenarios for reuse. This approach seeks to decrease the risk of consumer exposure to potentially toxic materials, thereby promoting greater confidence in plastic products.
Food security is vital, and the SAFEREUSE project aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), contributing to the protection of public health. Through its research, AIMPLAS ensures consumer safety while helping organizations stay competitive, in an increasingly demanding sector in terms of food safety regulations.
This research project has the collaboration of companies such as Pohuer Creative Injection and Great Plastic, who play an important role in the development of sustainable solutions for the plastics industry.
