The Kohzan Maru VII, a dual-fuel methanol carrier built by HD Hyundai Mipo(HMD) in South Korea, was officially delivered on May 30. This vessel is ready for operation and will serve Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company(MGC) under a long-term charter contract managed by Mitsui OSK Lines(MOL) and Eifuku Kaiun.
Collaboration between HMD, MOL and MGC
The Kohzan Maru VII is the first ocean-going vessel of this type to sail under an extended contract in Japan. After her christening took place days before delivery, in the presence of Masashi Fujii, president of MGC, who made her name official. This model represents the seventh generation since the original Kohzan Maru, launched in 1983, which pioneered the safe and efficient transportation of methanol.
[post_relacionado]The new vessel will transport methanol and, at the same time, run on sustainable methanol derived from renewable sources. In this way, the dual propulsion technology will minimize polluting emissions, in line with MOL’s Environmental Vision 2.2, which aims to achieve zero net emissions by 2050.
With a deadweight tonnage of 47,960 tons and equipped with a Hyundai-MAN B&W engine, the Kohzan Maru VII furthers MOL and MGC’s commitment to maritime energy transition and fleet expansion with clean alternative fuels such as methanol and liquefied natural gas.
MOL operates one of the largest methanol fleets, with 19 vessels at present, and expects to expand this number to 90 units. to 90 units powered by LNG or methanol by 2030.LNG- or methanol-powered units by 2030. The experience accumulated since the delivery of the first dual-fuel vessel in 2016 underpins this energy projection.
